What we record, and why
The World Folk Atlas helps folk ensembles find festivals, and festivals find groups. To do that well we keep a small amount of information about the people who use it. Here is all of it.
If you have an account
- Your details — your name, e-mail address, password (stored scrambled, never readable, not even by us), your ensemble if you tell us, and the language you prefer.
- What you keep — your saved lists, ratings and notes. Only you can see them.
- Your account’s history — when you signed up, signed in, changed your password or e-mail address. This keeps your account safe and helps us sort out problems.
How people use the site
To learn which parts of the atlas are useful, we count which pages and cards are opened, what people search for, which filters they use, and which locked parts they try to open. Each browser gets a random number in a cookie so we can tell one visitor from another — the number says nothing about who you are. If you sign in, what that browser did is joined to your account.
We record which festival or group you looked at, never anyone’s contact details.
In the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland we ask before counting anything. Everywhere else counting is on unless you turn it off. You can change your mind at any time: .
The cookies
- Signing in — keeps you signed in. Needed for the site to work.
- Your choices — your language and your answer about cookies.
- Counting visits — the random number above. Only with your agreement where the law asks for it, and removed when you choose “Only what’s needed”.
Who else sees it
Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared for advertising. The site is run by Mayn LLC. It is hosted by Vercel and its database is kept by Supabase; they store the information for us and use it for nothing else. When paid memberships open, payments go through Stripe, and we never see your card.
Your choices
- Change your e-mail address, password or language on your account page.
- Delete your account from the same page. Everything in it goes with it — lists, notes, settings and the record of what you looked at.
